Would you like your smile to show more teeth and less gum? Have you broken a tooth at the gum line? As part of our restorative dentistry, Pearl Dental Care offers a surgical procedure for patients whose smiles might be a bit too gummy, or to make tooth restoration possible below the existing gum line. Crown lengthening removes gum tissue or bone as needed to expose more of your natural tooth.
If you want a toothier smile, crown lengthening is an ideal technique that will bring out more of those pearly whites that were hiding behind excess gum tissue. This can be done for a single tooth to even out your gum line, or span several teeth for a fuller overall smile.
Sometimes tooth repair will require crown lengthening to access the area in need of work. Decay below the gum line, a cracked tooth or crown installation may necessitate that more of the tooth is exposed to facilitate the required work.
How Crown Lengthening Works
Your Pearl Dental Care periodontist will cut away an amount of gum tissue, bone, or both that will expose the right amount of your natural tooth. Crown lengthening surgery may involve neighboring teeth in order to maintain an even smile and gum line.
Your gums will be cleaned and stitched, and the stitches will be removed within 7 to 10 days. If you have crowns on affected teeth, those crowns may be removed for the lengthening procedure. Temporary crowns will be replaced afterwards.
Gum tissue often shrinks during the healing process, which will take several months. We will replace your temporary crowns with permanent ones as soon as the gums have healed, to ensure that your crowns are not visible above the gum line.
We'll schedule follow-up visits to check on your progress and set a date to put your permanent smile in place! Contact Pearl Dental Care today for an appointment and find out if you're a good candidate for the crown lengthening service.
